Healthy Breakfast Smoothie Recipes

You just need something to hold you over until lunch or a filling smoothie that will replenish your energy, healthy breakfast smoothie recipes are a great go-to.

They give you the benefits of a bunch of different ingredients all at once and the cleanup is fairly minimal compared to making a full breakfast meal.

Not to mention that each smoothie has a unique taste that you can’t get anywhere else because it can only be achieved by blending everything together.

This post is all about healthy breakfast smoothie recipes.

There are already TONS of smoothie recipes on this blog, but there may be something else you had in mind, which is why this will be in the style of a ‘choose your own adventure’ post.

Maybe you already have a couple of ingredients in mind, but don’t know what else to use to wrap it up and make a cohesive smoothie.

Or maybe you have no idea what you want to do and are just going to look at ingredients until something looks good.

Either way, you will be able to get your smoothie from start to finish, from ingredients to product. 

Sometimes, if you have too many ingredients, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out what to put in or maybe just what you need at the moment.

Once you get the hang of it, smoothies are super easy to put together. But until then, it can seem like a hassle to clean up the dishes, and get everything prepared.

But if you are going to experiment with anything, smoothies are one of the best drinks to try it with because some flavors can blend together If the taste does not turn out well.

On the other hand, you may discover a new pairing of flavors that you really enjoy, and wouldn’t have discovered otherwise.

Mixing ingredients that you wouldn’t normally be able to combine is one of the best parts of smoothie making and it is a lot of fun to try different flavor combinations.

For kids, they remain one of the most effective ways to sneak in healthy vegetables and vitamins without the taste.

Let’s start constructing your smoothie!

Starting off with the fruit, here are some of the fruits that I have used before:

Blueberries

Most of my smoothies include blueberries, in one way, or another, most commonly in the form of frozen blueberries, because they are easy to handle and have a high amount of antioxidants.

Raspberries

Raspberries, also come in a mixed berry pack, which is usually what is added to my smoothies, but they also provide a lot of flavor when used by themselves.

Depending on if they are in season, the raspberries could give off a very sweet, taste, or bring a tart aspect to a smoothie.

If you are not a fan of seeds in your smoothies, raspberries, might not be the best option for you. The blender will cut down the amount, but they are definitely still noticeable.

Blackberries

Blackberries add a lot of sweetness to your smoothie, and also a lot of seeds like raspberries. If you add only blackberries to your smoothie, the amount of seeds might get a little frustrating. 

If you end up using these, try keeping a variety of fruits.

Strawberries

When mixed with other fruits, strawberries, add a ton of flavor and sweetness to the mix.

By using frozen strawberries, they will most of the time be sweet all the way through. If you use fresh strawberries, you may want to check if they are ripe, because, without the aid of other fruits, strawberries can make a smoothie very sour.

Pineapple

The flavor of pineapple gives off the vacation vibe without being too much. However, other fruits that are added to the smoothie may be slightly overpowered by the prominent pineapple flavor.

Every day smoothies, I don’t typically see pineapple being used, but if you have a craving for it, or really need to sit back with a drink, tropical fruits, like pineapple will take you there.

Mango

Pineapple and mango create such a wonderful blend that is perfect for a tropical vacation or if you just want to feel like you are on one.

Mango smoothies are good by themselves, but they shine the brightest when complemented by other ingredients like pineapple or coconut.

Coconut

Coconut is a delicious and sweet ingredient to add to smoothies. This would be a good choice if you want to enhance the flavor of the other ingredients.

Coconut itself is fairly sweet but doesn’t have a strong flavor, so it works best when paired with strong-tasting fruits.

Oranges

Orange is a very strong flavor to add to your smoothie and may take over as the dominant taste.

It’s great for refreshing smoothies, or if you want something like this for breakfast as a replacement for orange juice.

If you want a thicker smoothie, you may want to freeze the oranges beforehand, just because orang is a very watery fruit and will liquefy your smoothie very quickly.

Apples

Similar to oranges, apples have a very high water content so if you were planning to add a lot to your smoothie, you may want to freeze it in advance to keep the consistency from being too thin.

Bananas

Not only do they add a super creamy consistency, they also enhance the flavors of the other fruits added to your smoothie.

Bananas are often used to add thickness to a smoothie, but they do add a nice amount of sweetness.

If you add only a couple of ingredients, you may find the banana taste overpowering, but with a combination of several different flavors, you won’t notice it as much.

This may only be an issue if you don’t like a strong banana taste, but if that is not a problem for you, you don’t have to worry about hiding the banana.

Avocado

Similar to bananas, avocados are a great ingredient to add if you want your smoothie to be creamy. They also have great healthy fats and will help keep you full after drinking your smoothie instead of feeling peckish.

Moving on to liquids!

Milk

This would be the go-to base for any smoothie, but there are some variations you can use for a stronger flavor or if you have dietary restrictions.

Coconut Milk

Coconut milk, just like coconut, is a great addition to a smoothie if you are looking for something that will sweeten the overall flavor without tasting like only coconut.

Almond Milk

In my experience, almond milk tends to add even more sweetness to a smoothie but does not give off a nutty taste.

Oat Milk

Oat milk tastes a lot more like almond milk, but you won’t be able to taste the flavor as much as the coconut aftertaste or almond hints.

Orange juice

If you are making an orange smoothie with any fresh oranges, using orange juice is highly recommended if you want a sharp orange taste.

Apple juice

The same logic applies to apple juice as it does to orange juice, if you are making a smoothie with apples, sometimes the apple can get lost with the other ingredients.

Apple juice helps keep the flavor without overpowering the rest of the ingredients.

Other ingredients:

Chia seeds

They have tons of beneficial vitamins, but may not be the best choice if you don’t like the added texture.

Protein Powder

Depending on what you need it for, protein powder could be the easiest to add to a smoothie. Especially if you already drink smoothies in the morning.

Whether you just need the extra protein or want to grow muscle and recover after a workout, protein powder will give you that support.

Spinach

One of the best vegetables to hide in a smoothie if you plan on feeding unsuspecting kiddos their greens!

It doesn’t add any flavor to the smoothie, and spinach is a great source of iron.

Peanut Butter

This is another good source of protein if you don’t have or don’t want to use protein powder. 

It thickens up the consistency of your smoothie and will add a savory finish. Depending on how much you include, you can mess with the intensity of the flavor.

Chocolate Chips

For some extra fun crunch, add some chocolate chips! This is the best way to turn a smoothie into a dessert, and you can use whatever kind of chocolate chips you have.

You can sprinkle these on top or add to the blender for a smoothie consistency.

And those are just a couple of the many, many ingredients you can add to your smoothies!

There are so many interesting and delicious combinations you can create with all of these different fruits and add-ins, the possibilities are limitless. 

And remember that not all of the potential smoothie ingredients are on this list, so feel free to experiment if you think it would taste good.
